History //

1830

The original part of the building was built by Gonville & Caius college, as a house for one of its’ Senior Fellows.

1948

Mr. H. Brindley became proprietor of the building, changing it into a Guest House with 15 bedrooms.

1962

The business was sold to Mr. H. Ridgeon, a Cambridge builder who had a big vision for the Guest House.

1972

The Gonville Hotel was opened under Mrs E. Hooper.

1992

Mr. R. Watson became General Manager of the Hotel. Over this period the hotel became part of the Best Western Franchise and the Building was extended by adding the two wings to either side of the original building bringing the total number of bedrooms to 84 and creating the light and airy Atrium in the middle.

2014

Under a new General Manager Mr. C. Ogston, extensive refurbishment of the hotel began with the vison of making the Gonville Hotel, Cambridge’s Independent hotel of choice!

2015

The decision was made to leave the Best Western Franchise and become known as an independent hotel.

2016

Following the completion of new bar and building of the second restaurant the hotel welcomed Master Chef Hans Schewitzer and his renowned restaurant Cotto to the hotel.

2017

I enjoyed being so close to everything in Cambridge so I could walk to the various activities, shopping and restaurants!
I even ventured out one evening riding a bicycle! The hotels offers these as a courtesy to guests for their use. I highly recommend the Gonville!

Lovely hotel which is well located for the centre of Cambridge. Very comfortable with wonderful staff. The complimentary Bentley chauffeur service was an unexpected bonus and my parents had a wonderful Diamond Wedding celebration.
